The Driven Journey of Michael Oher: United with the Tuohy Family

  • Michael Oher, the former NFL player who inspired the acclaimed film “The Blind Side,” has filed court documents alleging that the Tuohy family never officially adopted him.
  • Oher claims that the Tuohys tricked him into signing conservatorship papers instead of adoption papers.
  • Oher and the Tuohy family gained widespread attention following their depiction in the 2009 movie “The Blind Side.”

Michael Oher, the former NFL player who served as the inspiration for the hit film “The Blind Side,” has brought forth allegations that the Tuohy family, portrayed in the movie, did not officially adopt him but instead placed him under a conservatorship to benefit themselves.

Oher, while a high school student, was taken in by the Tuohys. However, he remained a ward of the Tennessee foster care system during his time with them.

According to court documents obtained by Insider, Oher claims that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy deceived him into signing conservatorship papers three months after his 18th birthday in 2004.

The conservatorship allegedly granted the Tuohy family complete control over Oher’s ability to negotiate contracts or agreements. This included a deal that allowed the Tuohys and their two children, Collins and Sean Tuohy Jr., to receive millions of dollars in royalties from “The Blind Side,” while Oher received nothing.

Oher further asserts that the Tuohy family viewed him as an easily manipulated young man, exploited for their own gain. In the court documents, he seeks to terminate the conservatorship.

Members of the Tuohy family have responded to Oher’s allegations.

Sean Tuohy stated in an interview with The Daily Memphis that he is open to ending the conservatorship. He denies that the Tuohys profited from the film, instead claiming that the author of the book that inspired “The Blind Side,” Michael Lewis, shared half of his earnings with them. The family then split the proceeds equally.

Sean Tuohy Jr., on the other hand, refutes the claims of making millions from “The Blind Side.” The Tuohys have accused Oher of attempting a “$15 million shakedown” by threatening negative publicity.

This situation has led to the current state of affairs between Oher and the Tuohys.
