Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer is set to host a forum on AI policy in September, bringing together top tech executives such as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Altman. This forum aims to facilitate the creation of bipartisan legislation to regulate the rapidly evolving technology of artificial intelligence.
Schumer, a Democrat from New York, previously hinted at his plans to organize “AI Insight Forums” as a foundation for his legislative efforts in addressing the risks associated with AI. The guest list for the inaugural forum, scheduled for September 13, includes influential figures like Sundar Pichai, Jensen Huang, Eric Schmidt, and Satya Nadella.
Schumer argues that the swift progress of AI necessitates a new legislative approach for managing its risks and benefits. He proposes bringing together a diverse range of AI experts to gather their insights and shape AI-related legislation.
According to a report by Axios, the guest list for the September forum was revealed.
In a speech on the Senate floor in June, Schumer described these gatherings as unique events. He highlighted the opportunity for lawmakers to listen to experts and translate their ideas into legislation, emphasizing the complexity and fast-paced nature of AI.
A flurry of activity in Washington to regulate AI coincides with the forum, with lawmakers engaging in private meetings, dinners, and briefings with AI experts, including CEOs of the companies that will be affected by regulations. However, concerns have been raised about potential influence from Silicon Valley companies and the need to maintain independence in crafting AI legislation.
