You can now listen to Fox News articles! Whether or not you are a fan of Taylor Swift’s music, there’s no denying that she has become a cultural phenomenon. However, before blindly following the masses, it’s important to approach this phenomenon with caution. Swift’s Eras Tour is set to become the highest-grossing tour of all time, with tickets being sold at steep prices. Many people, including my kids, are planning trips to attend her concerts and score the cheapest tickets possible.
As a parent, I can appreciate and acknowledge the appeal of a cultural phenomenon, but what I don’t appreciate is Swift’s foray into political activism. Especially when my kids, who belong to Generation Z, are her target audience. Personally, I preferred it when she focused solely on making music. However, it seems like she’s getting back into the political arena. Considering that her concerts are filled with mostly Generation Z fans, one has to wonder if the second leg of her Eras Tour will serve as a series of campaign rallies for the Democratic party in the year 2024. In fact, it’s not even a wonder anymore since she recently registered 35,000 people to vote on National Voter Registration Day.
Swift undeniably has a massive reach, and anyone who denies this is simply not paying attention. However, in 2018, she appointed herself as the moral authority on all things political. This move has caused her to be constantly in the spotlight and has stirred controversy. Her comments during the midterms that year led to 65,000 new voters registering in just one day. But in the end, Marsha Blackburn, the candidate she opposed, emerged victorious with a 55-43 percent victory. So much for Swift’s influence.
In 2019, she publicly declared that she is pro-choice, most likely succumbing to pressure from left-wing radicals. These radicals, suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, have pushed for extreme measures regarding abortion rights. It makes you wonder if Swift agrees with these extreme views. During her Eras Tour this year, she even criticized laws that protect children from sexually graphic drag shows and prohibit gender reassignment surgeries for minors. It’s clear that she needs to reassess her moral compass before asking others to follow her lead.
Perhaps this is just a glimpse of what we can expect from Eras 2.0, an unbearable campaign commercial that aligns with Taylor’s moral compass. People should be warned before purchasing tickets. Hopefully, she’ll have more success selling football jerseys than she does selling her political opinions. After Taylor spent time with Travis Kelce’s mother during a Chiefs’ game, his jersey sales skyrocketed by 400 percent. With the star power of Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes, it’s surprising that the “Real Housewives” franchise hasn’t capitalized on the Chiefs yet. The combination of drama and Swift’s music would make for compelling television.
Travis has recently announced that he will keep a low profile “moving forward” for Taylor’s sake. Little does he know, he is about to become the star of her next album. If you’re in your 30s and going through relationships like changing shoes, and if every breakup ends up being turned into a song performed in front of thousands of people, maybe it’s time to take a step back. Seriously, where is Taylor’s mother? Someone needs to intervene and save her from this destructive cycle.
Certainly, Swift’s success in the world of entertainment is indisputable. However, her success as a political figure leaves much to be desired. She has been nothing more than a talking head with no substantial impact. But as the cultural landscape evolves, so too can public opinion. In the words of C.S. Lewis, “When the whole world is running towards a cliff, he who is running in the opposite direction appears to have lost his mind.” So before attaching yourself to a cultural “norm,” take a moment to think twice and, if necessary, “Shake it Off.”
