Suspect Identified in Cook’s Corner Shooting with Fatalities; 2 Victims in Critical Condition

A tragic incident occurred at Cook’s Corner, a historic bar/restaurant in Trabuco Canyon, when a retired police sergeant from Ventura fatally shot three people and injured six others. The shooter, identified as 59-year-old John Snowling, entered the establishment and specifically targeted his estranged wife, shooting her without any conversation or argument. He then proceeded to randomly fire into the crowd.

According to Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes, Snowling had knowledge of his wife’s presence at Cook’s Corner and deliberately sought her out. The couple was in the middle of a divorce, and it remains unclear how long Snowling had been in the area or if he had been tracking his estranged wife’s movements.

Tragically, Snowling also shot and killed a woman who was dining with his wife, as well as a 67-year-old man from Irvine. Another man who attempted to intervene and stop the shooting was also fatally shot. Snowling was armed with three handguns and a shotgun, and when law enforcement arrived at the scene, he engaged in a shootout with them. Ultimately, Snowling was killed by police gunfire.

The survivors of this horrific incident were taken to Providence Mission Hospital, where some were listed as critical but stable. Snowling’s wife, Marie Snowling, who was shot in the jaw, was transferred to UCI Medical Center for treatment.

Cook’s Corner, known as a “biker bar,” is described by Barnes and Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer as a welcoming establishment for families. While historically associated with bikers, it offers a gathering place where people can enjoy a meal together. The community is deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at Cook’s Corner, and officials have expressed their support for the victims’ families and the law enforcement officers who responded to the scene.

Governor Gavin Newsom addressed the shooting and emphasized the importance of California’s “red-flag” laws, which allow for the temporary removal of firearms from individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others. Sen. Dave Min and Rep. Katie Porter also expressed their condolences and called for an end to gun violence.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder that no community is immune to the devastating effects of mass shootings. It highlights the urgent need for action to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of all individuals.
