A quarter of people are undoing the benefits of healthy meals with unhealthy snacks that raise the risk of heart disease and stroke, according to a recent study. Researchers analyzed the diets of 854 individuals and found that 95% of them snacked, consuming an average of 2.28 snacks per day. Contrary to popular belief, the study indicates that snacking itself is not unhealthy as long as the snacks are nutritious and consumed at the right time. However, making poor snack choices appeared to affect key health indicators such as body mass index and levels of fat and sugar in the blood. The study also revealed that 24% of the daily energy intake of people in the UK comes from snacks like cereal bars, pastries, and fruit.
