Supporters of Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, gathered outside the home of Attorney General Merrick Garland in Maryland on Sunday. They held a vigil urging Garland to drop the charges against Assange for publishing classified U.S. military documents. The documents were leaked by whistleblower Chelsea Manning and exposed war crimes, torture, and rendition by the U.S. government. Some of the Assange supporters gave speeches, arguing that the charges against him are an attack on press freedom. Martha Allen, the director of the Women’s Institute for Freedom of the Press, emphasized the importance of independent media and freedom of the press. Assange is currently fighting extradition to the U.S., where he would face multiple charges under the Espionage Act. If extradited, he could face up to 175 years in prison. The supporters at the vigil expressed their concern for Assange’s human rights and pleaded with Garland to drop the charges against him. They voiced their belief that Assange will not receive a fair trial if extradited to the U.S.
