The British government has entered into a partnership with Singapore, signaling a new era of economic growth and shared security, according to Downing Street. This treaty is the UK’s first since its departure from the European Union.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will meet Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong at the G20 Summit in India to formalize the partnership and work towards a bilateral investment treaty, Downing Street confirmed.
The partnership aims to boost confidence and encourage investment between Singaporean and British companies, as well as create job opportunities.
In addition, the British government states that the partnership will strengthen cooperation in security, science and technology innovation, and research and development, including the fight against cyber threats through collaboration between Singapore’s Digital and Intelligence Service and Britain.
“This new agreement with Singapore will propel us even further in achieving our priorities and ensure that as we shape the future of the global economy, we do so in partnership with our closest allies,” said Rishi Sunak.
Sunak and Lee are currently attending the G20 summit in New Delhi. This is Sunak’s first official visit to India since assuming office in October.
