In a bizarre incident in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot a man in the back after finding a handgun on a bed. The man, identified as Justin T. Wiley, 32, now faces felony charges for neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury and unlawful possession of a handgun. It is worth mentioning that Wiley is not legally allowed to carry a gun due to prior felony convictions, as reported by The Journal Gazette.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Fort Wayne police officers found Wiley on September 9 with a gunshot wound in his upper back. The incident occurred in the home of a woman who had an active protection order against him. Wiley admitted to the police that he had placed the gun on a bed, and the 2-year-old boy grabbed it and accidentally pulled the trigger.
Upon investigation, it was found that the child had gunpowder marks and swelling accompanied by blistering on his right pointer finger. The child repeatedly exclaimed “owie” while looking at his injured finger.
Wiley was released on bond after his initial court appearance on Monday. The Associated Press attempted to reach Wiley for comment but was unable to reach him. Furthermore, there is no information available at this time about an attorney representing Wiley in court.
