Singer Gary Wright, Known for His Hit “Dream Weaver,” Passes Away at 80

Renowned singer-songwriter Gary Wright, celebrated for his chart-topping hits “Dream Weaver” and “Love Is Alive” in the 1970s, passed away on Monday at the age of 80. Tragically, he had been battling Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Stephen Bishop, a close friend and fellow singer, expressed his sorrow on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “I am deeply saddened by the news of Gary Wright’s passing. His vibrant personality and extraordinary talent made every moment we spent together truly delightful. His musical legacy will endure for generations to come.”

Wright’s musical journey began in his early years as a child actor in the Broadway production of “Fanny” alongside future “Brady Bunch” star Florence Henderson. He later became a member of the English rock band Spooky Tooth and contributed his piano skills to George Harrison’s critically acclaimed album, “All Things Must Pass.” This experience led to a profound friendship with the former Beatle, which Wright later documented in his memoir, “Dream Weaver: A Memoir; Music, Meditation, and My Friendship with George Harrison.” In a 2014 interview, Wright shared, “I always had an underlying belief in a higher power, and meeting George Harrison allowed me to dive deeper into the spiritual realm.”

As a solo artist, Wright achieved immense success with his singles “Dream Weaver” and “Love Is Alive,” both of which reached the impressive No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His music continued to resonate with audiences, as evidenced by the enduring popularity of “Dream Weaver,” which gained further recognition when featured in the hit comedy film “Wayne’s World” in 1992. Wright even re-recorded the song for the movie.

David Pack, co-founder of the band Ambrosia, paid tribute to Wright in a heartfelt Facebook post, acknowledging his evolution from a member of Spooky Tooth to a true music icon. Pack highlighted Wright’s groundbreaking hits “Dream Weaver” and “Love Is Alive,” along with his contributions as a keyboardist on multiple George Harrison solo albums. Pack expressed his belief that Wright was now in paradise, collaborating with Harrison on new musical endeavors.

In addition to his collaborations with Harrison, Wright also joined Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band, embarking on tours with the group in 2008, 2010, and 2011. Wright leaves behind a lasting musical legacy, having touched the hearts of countless fans with his talent and passion. He was married twice and is survived by his two children.
