Simona Halep has nose surgery after US Open loss, divorce

Two-time Grand Slam champ Simona Halep revealed that she recently underwent nose surgery, putting an end to her 2022 season.

In a lengthy note posted to her Twitter account on Thursday — which included a photo of Halep’s bandaged nose — the winner of the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019 explained that she is “completely exhausted mentally.” The 30-year-old Romanian said that she underwent nose surgery at her doctor’s discretion due to breathing issues she had experience for years that were “becoming worse” over time.

“I could never do it earlier because I never found the necessary three months for the recovery, because tennis was always the first priority in my life,” she said. “But I felt it’s the right time to do it and also to do something for myself as a person.

“That is why I did also the esthetic part, that I wanted to do for a long time as I did not like my nose at all. So I did it, I solved the functional part and the esthetic part.”

Halep’s post came after her shocking first-round loss to qualifier Daria Snigur at the U.S. Open last month. Just over a week later, news broke that Halep is divorcing her billionaire husband, Toni Iuruc, less than a year after they married.

“I don’t know how long the recovery will take, for the moment I am not thinking about anything but recovery,” Halep wrote. “What is sure, is that this year I won’t be able to compete in any official tournament anymore.

“My 2022 season is over. 2022, you have been an interesting year full of everything! See you on the court, 2023! I feel like I still have a lot to do on a tennis court and still have some goals.”

Halep did not directly address her relationship with Iuruc in her Twitter note.

Iuruc, meanwhile, confirmed the split, telling Romanian reporters that it was a mutual decision, according to news.com.au. They would have celebrated their first wedding anniversary on Thursday.

“We decided together with Simona to break up,” Iuruc said. “Stop insisting, it’s my last public appearance … The rest will be handled by the lawyers in the most civilized way possible. Thank you for understanding.”

Halep and Iuruc began dating in 2018.
