Sikhs For Justice Claims Indian Government Involvement in High-Profile Murder
The human rights advocacy group, Sikhs For Justice, has announced plans for peaceful protests aimed at “shutting down” Indian consulate offices in Canada next week. The group has obtained new intelligence that appears to link the Indian state to the recent high-profile murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the president of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, was gunned down in the parking lot of the Surrey temple after evening prayers on June 18. Nijjar, a prominent community leader and supporter of Sikh separatism, was well-known in the community.
On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed that national security authorities had obtained credible intelligence linking “agents of the government of India” to Nijjar’s killing. This confirms earlier suspicions by the World Sikh Organization of Canada and others.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has strongly denied these claims, calling them absurd and motivated. They issued a statement urging the Canadian government to take action against anti-India elements operating in Canada.
Protests are scheduled to take place outside Indian consulates in Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver on Monday. Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, legal counsel for Sikhs for Justice, stated that the group intends to push the Canadian government to name the individuals responsible for Nijjar’s assassination.
In a recent statement, India emphasized its commitment to the rule of law and rejected any connection to the murder. It also labeled the Khalistan movement, which Sikhs for Justice supports, as a terrorist organization.
Canada has expelled Pavan Kumar Rai, a top Indian diplomat, in response to the intelligence findings. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed that Rai led the Canadian branch of India’s foreign intelligence service. Sikhs for Justice is calling for the expulsion of Indian High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Verma as well.
Jaskaran Sandhu, a board member of the World Sikh Organization of Canada, believes that protests may continue beyond next week due to the unprecedented nature of the intelligence findings. He stated that the entire country is shaken by the news and called it a story for the ages.
B.C. Premier David Eby has expressed his deep concern and anger regarding the allegations against India. He called on the federal government to share all relevant information on foreign interference and transnational organized crime threats with provincial authorities.
The World Sikh Organization of Canada has made several demands to the federal government following these findings, including increased protection for Sikhs facing threats from India or its agents. The organization has accused Canadian law enforcement agencies of failing to protect Nijjar, who had expressed concerns about threats to his life before his assassination.
Sikhs for Justice is organizing referendum votes on Khalistan worldwide and is advocating for Canada to label India a state sponsor of terror. Despite the fear and threats faced by the Sikh community, activists have vowed to continue their fight for self-determination and the establishment of Khalistan.
