Clifton Park native finishes career as Saints’ leader in wins and shutouts

Clifton Park native Greg Monroe, a Siena soccer goalkeeper, was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week three times this season.

Greg Monroe of the Siena men’s soccer team was named Monday as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s top goalkeeper, the first Saint to win the the award.

Monroe, a graduate student from Clifton Park, was given the 2022 Golden Glove when the MAAC announced its annual awards and all-league teams. He ranked second in goals against average (1.02) and third in both total saves (79) and saves per game (4.39).

Monroe became Siena’s all-time leader in wins, shutouts, goalkeeper minutes, and matches played. He was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week three times this season.

Monroe’s college career ended on Sunday with Siena’s loss at Niagara on penalty kicks in a MAAC quarterfinal. Monroe made five saves. 

Four Siena players received first-team all-MAAC honors: Monroe, sophomore forward Thomas Storodegard, sophomore midfielder Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen and sophomore defender Henrik Winkelmann.

Saints junior forward Bilal Hersi and sophomore midfielder Erik Reis were named to the all-MAAC second team.
