Justin Brownlee, the key player who led the Philippines to its first Asian Games basketball gold since 1962, has recently tested positive for banned substances, officials announced on Thursday.

The American-born Brownlee was found to have traces of the banned Carboxy-THC, a compound associated with cannabis use, according to the Lausanne-based International Testing Agency (ITA).

The ITA stated, “The sample was collected by the ITA at the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 during an in-competition anti-doping control performed on 7 October 2023. The athlete has been informed of the case and has the right to request the analysis of the B-samples.”

In the men’s basketball final on October 6, Gilas Pilipinas defeated Jordan with a score of 70-60, with Brownlee contributing 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Asian Games concluded on Sunday.

Similarly, the ITA announced that Jordan’s basketball player Sami Bzai also tested positive for a banned steroid.

Bzai is also entitled to request the analysis of the B-samples.

These recent positive tests bring the total number of doping cases at the Games to 10.
