A 13-year-old student from the Burbank Unified School District has been arrested on charges of posting criminal threats on social media, announced authorities on Thursday.
Burbank Police Department spokesperson, Stephen Turner, revealed that detectives were alerted to a potential threat against Luther Burbank Middle School, which is situated on Jeffries Avenue in the 3700 block, on Wednesday evening via social media.
Upon discovering the post, the police initiated an investigation to identify the person responsible for the threat, Turner added.
Subsequently, the police arrested a 13-year-old student. The student was later released into the custody of their parents, receiving a citation for criminal threats. Alongside the arrest, detectives also seized a replica firearm that was depicted in the social media post.
The Burbank Police Department stated, “Both the Burbank Police Department and the Burbank Unified School District acknowledge that rumors of a threat cause fear and anxiety among children and parents. We want to assure you that we take incidents like these seriously, conducting thorough investigations and holding those responsible fully accountable within the boundaries of the law.”
