The National Security Agency is launching an innovative artificial intelligence security center, marking a critical step as AI capabilities become increasingly integrated into US defense and intelligence systems. Army Gen. Paul Nakasone, the outgoing director of the agency, announced this development on Thursday. He explained that the center will be incorporated into the NSA’s Cybersecurity Collaboration Center, where it collaborates with private industry and international partners to strengthen the US defense-industrial base and protect against threats from adversaries like China and Russia, according to the AP. Nakasone emphasized the need to recognize and protect the current advantage the US has in AI, while specifically highlighting the threat posed by China.
When asked if there has been any indication of Russia or China trying to influence the 2024 US presidential elections, Nakasone responded, “We haven’t seen that yet.” He pointed out that there will be several elections taking place worldwide before then, and the US will work with its partners and allies to prevent any such interference. Cybersecurity researchers have noted that China has recently intensified cyber operations targeting US and allied institutions, potentially including the deployment of malware to disrupt military communications. In fact, the US and Japan issued a joint alert on Thursday, warning that Chinese hackers are targeting government, industrial, telecommunications, and other entities that are supportive of their militaries.
Nakasone was also asked about utilizing AI to automate the analysis of threat vectors and identify potential risks. In response, he reminded the audience that US intelligence and defense agencies already utilize AI technology. However, he emphasized that the ultimate decision-making process remains in the hands of humans. As Nakasone prepares to step down, Air Force Lt. Gen. Timothy Haugh, his current deputy, will succeed him as the dual leader of the NSA and Cyber Command. This role grants Haugh authority over both US cyber-defense and offense, as well as the collection of signals intelligence through telecommunications surveillance. Nakasone has held this position since May 2018.
