Scientology Suit: Leah Remini Claims Harassment and Emotional Distress

Leah Remini, an accomplished actress and former member of Scientology, has taken legal action against the organization, claiming that she has faced stalking and harassment after leaving the faith in 2013.

The lawsuit, filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, includes allegations of civil harassment, stalking, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and defamation. Scientology leader David Miscavige is also named as a defendant.

The 53-year-old star of “The King of Queens” is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, with no specified amount. As of now, there has been no response from a Scientology representative.

The suit states, “Here, defendants have undertaken a campaign to ruin and destroy the life and livelihood of Leah Remini, a former Scientologist of nearly 40 years, a two-time Emmy-award winning producer, actress, and New York Times best-selling author, after she was deemed a suppressive person and declared fair game by Scientology in 2013, when she publicly departed Scientology…”

According to the lawsuit, Remini has been subjected to stalking, surveillance, harassment, threats, intimidation, and the spreading of malicious rumors through numerous Scientology-controlled social media accounts. These actions have been ongoing for the past decade.

The suit also alleges that Scientology has used its tax-exempt funds to pay social media companies to promote posts that target Remini. Furthermore, the organization has harassed and endangered Remini’s family, friends, colleagues, and business associates, resulting in the loss of personal relationships and business opportunities.

In a prepared statement, Remini said, “With this lawsuit, I aim to protect my constitutional rights to speak the truth and report facts about Scientology. I firmly believe that religious freedom should not be an excuse to intimidate, harass, and abuse those who exercise their First Amendment rights.”

In addition to her legal actions, Remini published the book “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology” in 2015 and hosted the documentary series “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath” on A&E from 2016 to 2019.
