Rory McIlroy bounces back from back injury setback to salvage FedEx Cup bid

Bidding for his fourth FedEx Cup victory since 2016, the world number two had a challenging front nine but showed resilience with a strong performance on the back nine. He made four birdies and two bogeys to finish with a score of 70 and tied for seventh place.

Meanwhile, FedEx Cup leader Scottie Scheffer missed an eagle putt on the sixth hole that would have given him a considerable lead. He struggled with bogeys at the eighth, 11th, and 12th holes, and encountered further trouble on the 15th hole when his shot landed in water. He ended up with a triple bogey, resulting in a one-over 71 and fourth place on the leaderboard at nine-under par.

Scheffer is one shot behind the leaders Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, and Keegan Bradley, who are all tied for the lead at 10-under par. However, despite McIlroy dealing with a back injury that almost prevented him from playing, he is only three shots behind the leaders. McIlroy shared that his back injury flared up while in the gym, but he managed to push through the pain and make it to the tournament.

After dropping a shot at the second hole and another at the eighth, McIlroy birdied the 10th with a great wedge shot. Although he struggled at the short 11th hole, he made up for it with a birdie at the 13th and an impressive two at the 15th. He finished the day at level par, in seventh place and four shots behind Scheffer.

While Scheffer had a roller coaster day with three-putts and a bad swing on the 15th hole, he remains optimistic and determined to keep fighting in the tournament. Despite his frustrations, he recognizes that being in contention despite a poor performance is a positive outcome.

In summary, McIlroy battled through a back injury to stay competitive in the tournament, trailing behind the leaders by only a few shots. Scheffer had an up-and-down round but remains motivated to bounce back in the upcoming rounds.
