Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is revolutionizing the shopping experience using artificial intelligence (AI). Not only is the retailer using generative AI to automate office tasks, but it’s also leveraging this technology to enhance customer service and product discovery.
In August, Walmart introduced “My Assistant,” a generative AI app for its office workers. This app assists employees with scheduling meetings, booking travel, ordering supplies, and generating reports.
But Walmart’s use of AI doesn’t stop there. The company has demonstrated how it’s utilizing this cutting-edge technology to create personalized and immersive shopping experiences for customers.
Walmart is employing generative AI in various ways to help customers find, compare, and customize products, as well as facilitate complex purchases using voice or text.
One notable application is the shopping assistant, a chatbot that aids customers with projects like planning a birthday party or decorating their homes. The shopping assistant can also assist in comparing and selecting products. It employs natural language processing and generative AI to communicate with customers via text or voice. By considering customers’ preferences and needs, it generates relevant suggestions and recommendations. Walmart plans to start testing the shopping assistant in the coming weeks.
In addition to the shopping assistant, Walmart is using generative AI to enable customers to virtually try products before making a purchase. By creating 3D representations of products from photos, customers can visualize how the items would look in their homes or on themselves. This feature is part of Walmart’s generative AI-powered search and shopping assistant.
Generative AI is also enhancing Walmart’s search and review features. By understanding the intent and context of customer searches, generative AI enables more accurate and relevant search results. For example, if a customer searches for the “best laptop for gaming,” generative AI ranks the products based on their gaming performance features, reviews, and ratings. Additionally, generative AI helps customers prioritize product features and provides review summaries based on customers’ preferences. This technology enhances the overall search experience for customers.
Walmart is also introducing a voice-assisted shopping tool that utilizes generative AI. With this tool, customers can perform complex purchases involving multiple steps or choices using voice commands. For instance, customers can use their voices to add groceries to their carts, check product availability, choose pickup or delivery time slots, and confirm orders.
To remain at the forefront of AI integration, Walmart has established an AI lab within one of its stores. This lab leverages sensors, cameras, and machine learning to optimize store conditions, product placement, and customer service.
By using generative AI, Walmart aims to provide customers with greater convenience, variety, and personalization while reducing costs and increasing efficiency. The retailer is committed to exploring all options and maintaining flexibility and adaptability in its AI systems.
This strategic use of generative AI by Walmart will likely shape the future of retail shopping. As the largest retailer, Walmart’s adoption of this technology will undoubtedly influence the rest of the industry.
