Leitner Designs, a California-based truck accessories company, is revolutionizing the cargo hauling industry with its innovative and smart storage solutions. The company’s latest offering, the all-new ACS Roof, challenges the traditional concept of a rooftop cargo box by providing a fully integrated automotive cargo carry system that flips open for easy access to tools, gear, and other essentials. With the ACS Roof, there’s no need to climb up on the vehicle to open or unload the cargo, making it a convenient and time-saving solution.
Founded by Bernhard Leitner in 2014, Leitner Designs started as a design and manufacturing firm working for other companies. However, it soon transitioned into designing and manufacturing its own hardware, leading to the development of the Active Cargo System (ACS) for pickup trucks. The ACS includes a skeletal over-bed rack that utilizes the space inside the frame sides to carry purpose-fit accessories like storage boxes, first aid kits, and water/shower canisters. This system allows users to carry larger cargo on lifted crossbars while keeping smaller tools and gear easily accessible from outside the truck.
Expanding on the success of its pickup ACS rack system, Leitner Designs has now introduced the ACS Roof, a purpose-built rooftop ecosystem for vehicles without a pickup bed. The ACS Roof features a robust aluminum rack with two T track channels on top of all crossbars. The new GearPod Roof lockers, measuring 48 inches long, mount directly to these channels using locking quick-mount clamps. These clamps are located inside each GearPod, keeping them protected and secure. With a flip-up hatch design, accessing gear is effortless, eliminating the need for ladders or climbing onto the vehicle. The integrated locks ensure the safety of belongings, making it a seamless and convenient solution.
Leitner currently offers the 90-L GearPod size, sealed with automotive-grade weatherproofing to keep water and dust out. Integrated struts allow for smooth and easy opening, and low-profile end handles facilitate lifting the pods onto and off the roof. Each GearPod weighs 29 lbs (13 kg) when empty and can hold up to 100 lbs (45 kg) on its top. Leitner has also designed the pods to work with mounting hardware for Maxtrax boards and Rotopax canisters, providing additional versatility. The ACS Roof rack itself has been strengthened to provide structural integrity, allowing users to freely move and remove crossbars without compromising its strength.
The ACS Roof and GearPods were recently showcased at the 2023 Overland Expo Mountain West show, and they are now available for purchase. The ACS Roof rack is priced at $1,300, while each GearPod retails for $699. Initially, the ACS Roof rack is compatible with the Toyota 4Runner (’10 to ’23), Toyota Tacoma (’05 to ’23), and Ford F-250, 350, and 450 (’17 to ’24). However, Leitner has included mounting plates with each pod, enabling customers with other platform racks to use the GearPods as well.
For pickup truck owners, Leitner Designs offers a platform rack that can be mounted directly to the ACS pickup bed rack or lower down over the bed or tonneau cover. Additionally, the company plans to introduce EVA foam carry bags for the GearPods, making storage and transport even more convenient. Excitingly, Leitner Designs has hinted at the possibility of launching more ACS Roof-mountable accessories in the future.
