Introducing Google’s Pixel 8 Pro – the smartphone with the brightest display on the market in the US. Not only that, but this innovative release also boasts exceptional power efficiency compared to its predecessors.
The Pixel 8 Pro provides users with an impressive AMOLED LTPO panel at 3120×1440 resolution. According to Kamila Wojciechowksa, this state-of-the-art display is the Samsung E7. The Pixel 8 Pro’s display has received rave reviews for its outstanding brightness and vibrant colors. With a stunning peak brightness of 2,400 nits, it’s undoubtedly one of the best displays available on any smartphone. However, its excellence extends beyond appearance.
Further analysis by Dylan Raga from XDA-Developers revealed that the Pixel 8 Pro’s display significantly outperforms its predecessor in power efficiency. According to Raga’s test, the new panel only requires 3W of power to reach 960 nits, which is less than half of what the Pixel 7 Pro demanded at the same brightness level (6.4W at 960 nits).
This year-over-year improvement is remarkable, especially considering the issues faced by the Pixel 7 Pro in this aspect. The Pixel 7 Pro consumed more power per nit compared to the Pixel 6 Pro and even drew more power than the Galaxy S22 Plus at a lower top brightness (during the test) of 964 nits (4.4W at 1,070 nits for the Galaxy S22 Plus).
The Pixel 8 Pro’s display also outperforms the displays of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in terms of power efficiency. In Raga’s test, both Apple and Samsung devices required closer to 4W of power to reach 960 nits, while the Pixel 8 Pro only needed 3W. Furthermore, the Pixel maintained its brightness while using less power as the brightness level increased. Raga noted that the Pixel is far ahead of its competitors in this area.
It’s important to note that Google’s lead in display technology may not be permanent. Samsung is expected to introduce a new display panel in the Galaxy S24 series, which can reach a maximum brightness of 2,500 nits. It’s likely that power efficiency advancements are also in the pipeline. Additionally, it remains unknown how the Pixel 8 stacks up against the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Raga has hinted at conducting more tests and sharing insights on this in the near future.
