In 2017, Congressman Steve Scalise experienced a horrific incident. He was shot on a Virginia ball field during congressional baseball practice. Fortunately, Rep. Brad Wenstrup, a former combat surgeon in Iraq, arrived quickly to apply a tourniquet and provide crucial medical assistance. Scalise’s life was saved thanks to Wenstrup’s quick thinking and resourcefulness.
Wenstrup recently shared his perspective on the incident, revealing that Scalise’s wound was particularly dangerous because there was no exit wound. The bullet had penetrated deeply, posing a significant threat. This reminded Wenstrup of a similar situation he encountered in Iraq, where a wounded soldier succumbed to severe injuries. Scalise’s survival was indeed fortunate.
However, Wenstrup believes that luck was not the only factor. He attributes Scalise’s extensive recovery to his personal courage, positive attitude, and unwavering faith. Scalise repeatedly expressed his gratitude to God and emphasized the role of faith and divine intervention in his book on the subject.

Wenstrup also commended Scalise for his refusal to blame anyone, including the Democrats, for the political attack. In contrast, the Virginia attorney general classified the attack by James Hodgkinson, a left-wing activist, as an act of political terrorism. Scalise’s resilience and positive demeanor not only facilitated his recovery in 2017 but also played a crucial role in his current position as the majority leader in the House and his campaign to become the speaker.
