Rep. Grace Napolitano, 86, Confirms Retirement Plans; LA-Area Democrat Stepping Down

Representative Grace Napolitano, a Democrat from El Monte, has made the decision to retire at the age of 86. Napolitano, who has served in Congress for 24 years following a successful career in local and state politics, made the announcement during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Grace F. Napolitano Nature Education Center in La Puente. She expressed gratitude for the people of the San Gabriel Valley and Southeastern Los Angeles County for their trust in her over the past quarter-century. Napolitano highlighted her achievements, including the Gold Line transportation project and numerous infrastructure improvements. She emphasized her commitment to representing her district, the state, and the nation, and expressed determination to continue fighting for the San Gabriel Valley until her term ends in 2024.

Napolitano’s retirement has sparked interest in the congressional seat for California’s 31st District, which encompasses several cities including El Monte, West Covina, Covina, and Baldwin Park. State Senator Bob Archuleta, Citrus Community College Trustee Mary Ann Lutz, and Baldwin Park Planning Commissioner Ricardo Vazques have already begun campaigning for the open seat.

Judy Chu, Napolitano’s colleague from Congress, celebrated her accomplishments and praised her dedication to securing funds for water cleanup efforts. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn also commended Napolitano for her advocacy on water-related issues and her commitment to serving the communities she loves.

Having begun her political career on the Norwalk City Council, Napolitano’s leadership eventually led her to the state Assembly and later Congress. She held positions on important committees related to transportation, infrastructure, natural resources, and the environment. Her retirement leaves a vacant seat that will undoubtedly be filled through a closely contested election in the heavily Democratic district.

Napolitano expressed her endorsement for State Senator Bob Archuleta, whom she described as a dedicated public servant. Archuleta has previously held positions on the Pico Rivera City Council and currently serves as a state senator. Napolitano recognized his commitment to serving the community and believes he will be an excellent representative for her congressional seat.

As Representative Napolitano prepares to retire, there is still work to be done in the San Gabriel Valley. She is determined to give her utmost effort every day to fight for the needs of her constituents until her term concludes. With a year and a half remaining in her tenure, Napolitano is focused on representing her district to the best of her abilities.

Her retirement marks the end of an era for the San Gabriel Valley and Southeastern Los Angeles County. Napolitano’s legacy of service and dedication to her community will be remembered for years to come.

Thank you, Representative Napolitano, for your contributions and commitment to the people you served. We wish you all the best in your well-deserved retirement.
