Renville County Residents Speak Out Against Proposed Power Line Route in Southwest Minnesota

On November 25th, Xcel Energy narrowed down the potential routes for a transmission line intended to transport renewable energy from southwestern Minnesota to just two options. However, concerns are growing in Renville County over one of these routes.

The southern of the two routes that are being considered for the Minnesota Energy Connection runs through eastern Renville County. While it mostly follows roads, it also traverses through agricultural fields. Members of the Renville County Board of Commissioners raised concerns about the adverse impact this route would have on agricultural operations, particularly when it deviates from road right of way.

During a presentation at the County Board meeting on November 21st, Board Chair Greg Snow emphasized the significance of agriculture in Renville County and how the proposed route would greatly impact the community. County Board member Randy Kramer also expressed how unhappy his neighbors were upon receiving notification about the potential routes. He pointed out that the proposed route encroaches on farm fields and fence lines, making it difficult to operate and maintain agricultural operations in those areas.

Additionally, Kramer highlighted that landowners feel the current proposed route does not align with what was previously presented to them, leading to dissatisfaction with the company’s compensation plans. Furthermore, he emphasized that Renville County would not reap any economic benefits from the Minnesota Energy Connection project, leaving them with only the visual impact of the transmission line.

Xcel Energy assured the commissioners that they would review the concerns and discrepancies raised by landowners. They explained that the company’s focus is to minimize the impact on landowners while considering their input on the possible routes. However, Langan acknowledged that the proposed route is not perfect and that adjustments could be made based on feedback from landowners and the county.

Ultimately, the decision on which route to select will rest with the state Public Utilities Commission (PUC). The transmission line is intended to carry renewable energy from Lyon County to Becker and is estimated to cost $1.14 billion.
