Mark Goddard, a beloved actor known for his role as Major Don West on the iconic sci-fi series “Lost in Space,” has sadly passed away at the age of 87. The news was revealed on Friday.
Goddard’s wife, Evelyn Pezzulich, took to Facebook to share the heartbreaking news. She announced that her husband passed away on October 10th in Hingham, Massachusetts due to pulmonary fibrosis. He had been battling pneumonia and was subsequently transferred to a rehabilitation center. Unfortunately, doctors discovered that he was in the final stages of pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition.
Mark Goddard was born on July 24, 1936, in Lowell, Massachusetts. He grew up in the charming coastal town of Scituate, where his father owned a general store. After completing high school, he attended Holy Cross in Worcester. Later, in 1958, he transferred to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City to pursue his passion for acting.
In the late 1950s, Goddard made the move to Los Angeles, where he quickly found success in the television industry. He appeared in various TV shows, including a notable role as a deputy in the Western series “Johnny Ringo,” which aired on CBS. He also portrayed Detective Sgt. Chris Ballard in “The Detectives,” a gripping crime drama that aired on ABC and later on NBC.
However, Goddard’s most memorable role came in 1965 when he landed the part of Major Don West in “Lost in Space.” The show followed the adventures of the Robinson family, a group of space colonists aboard the Jupiter 2, with Goddard’s character as the hot-tempered pilot.
Throughout his career, Goddard made guest appearances on various television programs. Some of these include “Perry Mason,” “The Mod Squad,” “Barnaby Jones,” and “General Hospital.” He also had a role in the cult film “Blue Sunshine” in 1976. Additionally, in 1978, he starred alongside Liza Minnelli in the Broadway musical “The Act.”
Goddard even had a cameo in the 1998 feature film adaptation of “Lost in Space,” where he portrayed a superior officer to his beloved character, played by Matt LeBlanc.
