Despite the uncertainty, museum officials were determined to commemorate the occasion. On his actual birthday, the museum hosted a naturalization ceremony and invited people to “come celebrate 99 new American citizens!”
President Joe Biden sent his birthday wishes to Carter through a video posted on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). He praised Carter as the spirit and heart of the American people. Meanwhile, celebrations took place in Plains, Georgia, Carter’s hometown and home to the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, which includes his boyhood farm and school.
The park shared a birthday message on Facebook, acknowledging Carter’s dedication to public service and his tireless efforts to improve the world. However, it remained unknown where Carter himself would be blowing out the candles. Last week, he and his wife, Rosalynn, were seen at the Plains Peanut Festival, marking a rare public appearance. Carter has been in hospice care at home for the past seven months, choosing to spend his final days with Rosalynn, who was diagnosed with dementia in May.
Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, who heads the Carter Center’s Board of Trustees, disclosed in September that the couple was “coming to the end.” Despite their health challenges, they remain happy and together. Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, is recognized for his significant accomplishments, such as the Camp David Accords, his advocacy for human rights, and his tough stance against the Soviet Union. After leaving office, Carter established the Carter Center and received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work in promoting human rights. He also played a pivotal role in expanding Habitat for Humanity into a global organization.
