Record-breaking Feline: Meet the ‘Roaring’ Cat, Setting a Blazing New Guinness World Record in Purr Volume!

A 14-year-old cat of mixed-breed has made a significant impact by setting a new world record. Bella, the cat, has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records (GWR) as the “world’s loudest purr by a domestic cat (living)” in a recent press release. According to GWR, Bella’s purr was measured at 54.49 decibels, which is as loud as a boiling tea kettle or a standard washing machine. The press release from GWR is titled “‘My cat purrs louder than the TV’: Noisy Bella claims loudest purr record.”

Nicole Spink, the owner of Bella, shared with GWR that she is accustomed to hearing her cat’s loud purr throughout the day, even while watching TV. Spink mentioned that her late husband used to complain about Bella’s purr overpowering the sound of the television in the evenings. Bella, a 14-year-old domestic short haired cat, has now set a new Guinness World Record for the loudest purr by a domestic cat (living). Spink, from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, UK, expressed her excitement about Bella’s achievement and how her family and friends always notice Bella’s loud purr. She added, “Everyone comments, ‘What’s that loud noise? Oh, it’s the cat.’ It’s just Bella being happy!”

Spink and her daughter decided to test Bella’s purr when they learned about the previous record for the loudest purr. They used a smartphone app to measure the pitch but sought a more accurate reading to ascertain if Bella truly broke the record. Spink was initially concerned that Bella might not perform her best during the official record attempt due to her stubborn nature. However, when Bella made her attempt, she immediately started purring.

The record-breaking purr was recorded by a sound engineer and approved by GWR’s official adjudicator, Dave Wilson. The purr was captured at a distance of one meter from Bella to the microphone. Spink is thrilled to share the news with her kids and recalls her own passion for the Guinness World Records books, which she used to receive as Christmas presents. She is excited to pass on her admiration for the records to her children. While the exact location of the record in the Spink household is yet to be determined, Spink jokingly said they might have to decide which kid’s photos to take down first.

Although Bella holds the record for the loudest purr by a domestic cat (living), the title for the loudest purr ever by a domestic cat is still held by two cats named Merlin and Smokey. Smokey recorded a purr at an astounding 67.8 dB in 2011, which is 13.21 dB louder than Bella. Merlin, owned by Tracy Westwood in Devon, UK, equaled Smokey’s record four years later, and they currently remain the record-holders.
