Renowned actor Rainn Wilson revealed his sense of unfulfillment while working on different seasons of the widely popular show “The Office,” where he portrayed the eccentric character Dwight Schrute.
As he promotes his newly released book, “Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution,” Wilson candidly discusses various aspects of his career and the constant pursuit of greener pastures.
During an episode of Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast (scheduled for release), Wilson shared, “When I was in ‘The Office,’ I spent several years mostly feeling unhappy because it wasn’t enough. I was earning hundreds of thousands. I wanted millions, and although I was a TV star, I aspired to become a movie star. It was never enough.”
The interview transcript, obtained by OutKick, offers insights into Wilson’s reflections on working with A-list actors while still experiencing dissatisfaction, despite the show’s immense success. To navigate this, Wilson embarked on “a profound exploration of spirituality,” a central theme in his latest book, as stated on TODAY.
“I’m part of a hit show, nominated for an Emmy every year, making lots of money, collaborating with incredible talents like Steve Carell, Jenna Fisher, John Krasinski, and brilliant writers and directors like Paul Feig,” he acknowledged. “I’m on one of the greatest TV shows, loved by the audience. Yet, I wasn’t enjoying it.”
Wilson continued, “I found myself pondering: ‘Why am I not a movie star? Why am I not the next Jack Black or Will Ferrell? Why don’t I have a thriving film career? Where’s my development deal?'”
The actor also confessed that he initially joined the acclaimed show solely to afford a house, recognizing that he became part of something much more significant.
Reflecting on the experience, Wilson articulated on the podcast, as reported by OutKick, “I failed to consider how my comedic performances brought joy, healing, and consolation to a grieving society. What a privilege it was to contribute to something like that.”
