Rain, plummeting temperature and gusty winds coming Monday – Orange County Register

Southern California residents can expect rain and chilly temperatures late Sunday into Monday, Oct. 25, forecasters said.

A storm could bring a half-inch to an inch and a half of rain to the Los Angeles area on Monday, though less to Orange County. Heaviest downpours should hit the San Bernardino Mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain totals in the forecast for Monday include about a half-inch in Ontario, a fourth of an inch in Irvine and a third of an inch in San Clemente.

Chilly temperatures in some areas are likely to be up to 20 degrees below normal for Oct. 25.

The storm system comes from the Gulf of Alaska, where the main portion will hit British Columbia.

“We’re getting the tail end of it,” said National Weather Service San Diego Meteorologist Casey Oswant.

As the system continues to move east next week, high-pressure building behind it will bring dry, warmer weather Tuesday through Friday, Oswant said.

While the storm won’t make a huge contribution to California’s much-needed rain, a system of that size, especially in October, is significant, said National Weather Service Los Angeles Meteorologist David Gomberg.

“Early season rain is helpful to offset some of the fire danger in the short term,” he said.

October and November are historically some of the worst months for wildfires in Southern California.

Projected Monday temperatures, according to the NWS:

Downtown Los Angeles: 62

Fullerton: 66

Long Beach: 65

Mission Viejo: 64

Redlands: 59

Riverside: 63

San Bernardino: 62

Torrance: 65

Van Nuys: 66

Whittier: 64
