The British Columbia government has issued an environmental assessment certificate for the contentious container port expansion project at Roberts Bank, stating that the province “could not prohibit the project from going forward.”
In a written statement, the government explains that the three-berth marine container terminal in Delta, B.C., south of Vancouver, is mostly located on federal land.
Since the project received approval from the federal government in April, the province has chosen to issue the certificate with specific requirements to protect provincial interests.
The government has established 16 conditions to minimize the negative impacts of the expansion, including plans for wetland and wildlife management, as well as greenhouse gas reduction for emissions.
The province acknowledges that two parties are seeking a judicial review of the federal decision to approve the expansion. However, B.C.’s ministers have decided to issue the certificate to ensure that the project addresses the concerns raised before moving forward.
