Introducing Lies of P: A Unique Souls-Like Experience
In an attempt to challenge the dominance of FromSoftware and their renowned souls-like video games, a young South Korean studio took an unconventional approach. They employed a vulnerable puppet with a dubious relationship with the truth as their protagonist.
This iteration of Pinocchio is equipped with a mechanical arm that can be customized with a grappling hook or a flame-throwing device, allowing for unique combat strategies.
Jiwon Choi, the director of Lies of P at Round8 Studio, explained that they sought a globally recognized character with a rich backstory. He wrote, “The story had everything we were seeking for Lies of P: elements of innocence and gore, with dark humor and compelling characters.”
FromSoftware has dominated the souls-like genre since the release of Demon’s Souls in 2009. These games are celebrated for their enigmatic narratives, epic boss battles, and grueling difficulty. Elden Ring, their latest open-world installment, sold over 20 million copies.
Unveiling Lies of P: A True Souls-Like Experience
Lies of P is set to release on Tuesday for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, showcasing striking resemblances to other FromSoftware titles such as Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Initial reviews have been generally positive, but the game must convince the devoted souls-like community that it offers an authentic experience, instead of being a mere imitation.
Immerse Yourself in a Dark Gothic World
Lies of P transports the essence of Carlo Collodi’s “The Adventures of Pinocchio” to the fictional city of Krat, inspired by the Belle Époque period. The game presents a hauntingly beautiful and terrifying world, where a mysterious figure in Victorian attire cautiously navigates the ruins, armed with a sword. Broken and bloodied bodies litter the streets, and the clash of steel rings through the air.
Master the Intricate Combat System
Just like any souls-like, combat is paramount in Lies of P. Drawing inspiration from Sekiro and Bloodborne, players control the protagonist P, engaging in intense battles that demand precision and quick reflexes. Perfectly timed parries can weaken enemies, ranging from simple soldier puppets to colossal bosses, leaving them vulnerable to devastating strikes.
What sets Lies of P apart is its unique weapon system. Players can disassemble weapons into handles and blades, mixing and matching to create their preferred combinations. This freedom in combat allows for a truly distinctive gameplay experience,” says Choi.
