A Republican NYC council member is facing criminal charges after openly carrying a handgun to a pro-Palestinian rally at a local college, according to the police. Council Member Inna Vernikov, who represents a district in south Brooklyn, surrendered to police on Friday after images of her with the gun circulated on social media. The firearm, identified as a black Smith Wesson 9 mm, was partially tucked in her waistband in photos online. It was not visible in a video she posted of herself at the rally.
In her video, Vernikov accuses the protesters of supporting Hamas and labels them as terrorists. She claims that if you stand with these people, you are nothing short of a terrorist without the bombs. The protesters were holding signs condemning Israel’s bombings of Gaza, where over 2 million people reside, nearly half of whom are children.
Vernikov’s office released a statement on Thursday, informing her constituents that local police officials assured her there were no credible threats of violence or terrorism in her district. However, she urged her constituents to remain vigilant and take responsibility for their safety and the safety of their families.
Although Vernikov is licensed to carry a gun, openly carrying a firearm is illegal in New York. Firearms are prohibited on school grounds and other sensitive locations, even for licensed gun owners. New York Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of following the state’s gun safety laws.
Vernikov, who recently obtained a gun license, has been charged with criminal possession of a firearm. Her gun and permit were surrendered.
New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams stated that Vernikov’s actions are under investigation and will be referred to the council’s Standards and Ethics Committee, of which Vernikov is a member. Adams suggested that Vernikov may need to be recused.
In response to the ongoing bloodshed and related protests, the NYPD has increased patrols and surveillance. Tensions remain high globally.
