Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, said he does not know if a vote of confidence will be triggered on the PM’s leadership but he said he believes it is “possible”.
The remark represents a significant shift because last week ministers were pouring cold water on the idea of Tory rebels hitting the 54-letter threshold.
Asked if a vote will take place, Mr Javid told Sky News: “I don’t know, that is the honest answer, no one knows at this point apart from Sir Graham Brady, my colleague, who is the chair of what is called the 1922 Committee.
“We know that a number of colleagues have already gone public with asking for such a vote, that is a decision of course for them. If 54 letters are reached I am sure a vote will be called. I do think it is possible but I don’t know.”
