Mick Jagger Hints at Utilizing Rolling Stones Catalog for a Meaningful Cause: Exclusive Insights

Mick Jagger isn’t enthusiastic about selling The Rolling Stones’ catalog. In an interview with WSJ Magazine published on Tuesday, the rock icon shrugged off the idea of selling the band’s catalog, turning a blind eye to recent moves by artists like Bob Dylan and Justin Bieber.

Instead, he suggested that the catalog could eventually be donated to charity. “The children don’t need $500 million to live well. Come on,” Jagger, a father of eight children, told the magazine. “You could do some good in the world,” he added.

The band has ownership of its catalog from music released after 1971, according to Consequence. Allen Klein’s company, ABKCO Music & Records, owns the rights to the band’s recordings before 1971, including hits like “Paint It Black” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” American Songwriter noted.

During the interview with WSJ Magazine, Jagger drew parallels between the band’s earlier record ownership issues and Taylor Swift’s struggles with owning her previous albums. “The industry was so new, it lacked the support and the number of people available to advise you as they do now,” he said. “But it still happens. Look what happened to Taylor Swift! I don’t really know the details, but she was obviously unhappy.”

Jagger and the Stones will be adding new music to their catalog in 2023. The band released the second single from their upcoming album, “Hackney Diamonds,” on Thursday. The album, set to be released on October 20, is their first album of original material in 18 years and the first since the passing of drummer Charlie Watts.

The single, titled “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” features collaborations with Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder.
