Amidst Twitter’s introduction of unpopular daily tweet limits, Instagram has unveiled its upcoming app called Threads. Billed as “Instagram’s text-based conversation app,” Threads is set to be released on Thursday. The app shares many similarities with Twitter, allowing users to share their thoughts through text or image-based posts called “threads” and interact with others. Threads also integrates closely with Instagram, enabling users to log in with their Instagram account and follow the same accounts. Meta, the owner of Instagram, has not provided further information about the app but previously expressed its interest in creating a separate text-based social media network for creators and public figures.
This launch comes as Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter, announced restrictions on the platform’s functionality. Twitter now limits the number of tweets users can read each day and prevents non-logged in users from viewing tweets on the web browser to protect against data scraping. In response to Meta’s Threads announcement, Musk sarcastically commented on their well-run operations. Meta has been facing its own challenges, including downsizing efforts and increased competition from TikTok.
The rivalry between Meta and Twitter extends beyond their commercial battle for users and has become more personal between the CEOs. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg even accepted Musk’s challenge for a cage match, adding to the public tension. Meta’s launch of Threads puts it in competition with other companies like Mastodon and Bluesky, who also aim to attract Twitter users with alternative social networks. Meta has a history of replicating successful features from rival apps, such as Instagram’s Stories and Reels, which have become integral to the platform’s success.
