Men’s Final at Wimbledon 2023: Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic Make It to the Top

July 14 (UPI) — Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic emerged victorious from the Wimbledon 2023 semifinals, setting up an eagerly anticipated clash between the world’s top two male tennis players in the final on Sunday in London.

Competing for the prestigious grass-court Grand Slam title and a first-place prize of $3 million.

“This final has been highly anticipated since the start of the tournament, for Alcaraz and myself,” stated Djokovic in a press conference. “It will be his first Wimbledon final.

“Both of us are in great form and playing exceptionally well.”

In the semifinal, Djokovic defeated the No. 8 seed Jannik Sinner from Italy with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) in a thrilling 2-hour, 47-minute match on Centre Court. The Serbian player, ranked No. 2, served 11 aces and capitalized on 2 of 9 break points.

Djokovic, the three-time defending Wimbledon champion, successfully fended off all six break point opportunities from Sinner. The Italian player hit eight aces and recorded 44 winners despite the loss.

In another semifinal, Alcaraz defeated the No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev from Russia in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in a 1-hour, 50-minute match on Centre Court. The top-ranked Spanish player hit four aces and 27 winners. He converted 6 of 14 break point chances and made 17 unforced errors.

Medvedev hit five aces and converted 2 of 4 break point opportunities. He hit 23 winners and made 19 unforced errors.

This will be the third meeting between Djokovic and Alcaraz, with the previous two matches taking place on clay. Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in straight sets during the 2022 Madrid Open semifinals. Djokovic, however, managed to defeat Alcaraz in four sets at the 2023 French Open.

“Playing in the semifinals and now reaching the final at Wimbledon is a dream come true for me,” said Alcaraz. “I can’t believe it. I am going to savor this incredible moment.”

Djokovic and Alcaraz will compete at 9 a.m. EDT on Sunday, with the match broadcasted on ESPN. The women’s singles final will air at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
