When Kellie Gerardi embarked on her space journey with Virgin Galactic earlier in the month, her then-5-year-old daughter Delta had a request – to be on the lookout for aliens. Although Kellie didn’t spot any extraterrestrial beings, she did surprise her daughter upon returning home with an alien-themed keychain she had brought along.
The challenges of juggling a career in space exploration and being a mother to a young child have indeed been demanding for Gerardi. She emphasizes how both aspects are equally essential to her, and she remains passionate and focused on fulfilling her responsibilities in both areas.
While life as an astronaut and a mother may not always align seamlessly, Gerardi strives to merge both roles, often staying in touch with Delta via FaceTime during work trips. Delta reciprocates with heartfelt notes and drawings that keep them connected, regardless of the distance.
Gerardi and Delta co-created Luna Muna, the protagonist of her children’s book series, inspired by their shared love for space exploration. Luna Muna, a character initially introduced during bedtime stories, became a hit and journeyed into space when astronaut Peggy Whitson read the first Luna Muna book from the International Space Station earlier this year.
Despite certain drawbacks due to her demanding schedule, Gerardi ensures special and memorable moments for her daughter. Her family-oriented approach is evident in the creative birthday parties she arranges, such as an epic Night at the Museum-themed celebration and detailed plans to compensate for missed events.
Complementing her in-depth involvement, Gerardi acknowledges the vital support of her family and child care team. She values the assistance of her mother, the after-school program, and the nanny, all contributing to Delta’s nurturing environment.
Gerardi dismisses any misconceptions of enforcing space-related influences on her daughter. Instead, she aims to instill the notion of pursuing life passions relentlessly and guilt-free. Delta’s boundless imagination and interests are openly encouraged, whether in science, music, or other areas.
Currently focused on expanding Luna Muna’s story and launching a space-themed clothing line, Gerardi looks forward to additional ventures into space. However, it is without a doubt that her most rewarding and significant adventure is motherhood.
