41 Workers Trapped in Tunnel Collapse
The plight of 41 construction workers trapped behind a large pile of rubble after a partial tunnel collapse ten days ago in India was highlighted in a video captured by a medical endoscopic camera. The workers, who looked dirty and weary, wore reflective jackets and hard hats as they provided a ray of hope. A narrow pipe provided the workers with oxygen and supplies, and an operation to rescue them has faced many challenges. Strategies involved in drilling into the tunnel have had to be suspended in light of fears that it might cause further collapses. Rescue workers have remained determined to reach the men and have managed to communicate with them remotely, offering much-needed hope to the workers’ families. Environmentalists have cautioned against major construction in the Himalayan region where the tunnel is being built. Despite the dangerous environment, rescuers continue to work towards a resolution of the crisis.
