On Friday morning, cars started cruising into the OC Fair & Event Center, taking a spot among the five buildings that will open to the public Saturday, Sept. 24, for the 21st Cruisin’ For A Cure.
The always popular car show mixes an important message about early detection for prostate cancer in with the massive overload of horsepower on display that is sure to get any car enthusiast revved up. More than 3,500 custom cars, street rods, hot rods, exotics, trucks and other specialty vehicles are participating this year.
The owners can decide to keep their cars in park for viewing or throw them in gear and cruise a 1.5 mile route around the fairgrounds.
September is Prostate Awareness Month and free screenings will be offered at the event, which was started by Debbie Baker who has been on a journey to raise awareness through screenings and early detection after her own husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Cruisin’ For A Cure can be credited for testing more than 15,000 men, organizers said, with more than 4,000 showing signs of elevated indicators for the cancer.
The Cruisin’ For A Cure car show is open 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa. Admission is $17 a person, those 12 and younger are free. There will also be vendors and entertainment and a special “Women & Wheels” exhibit featuring more than 50 women-owned cars.
