The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (Sag-Aftra) has taken decisive action by initiating a strike on July 13. The strike was prompted by a failure to reach a resolution with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on various matters, including pay and the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Notably, prominent Hollywood stars, along with 160,000 actors, have joined the strike, standing in solidarity with the 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) who commenced their strike on May 2.
American novelist, Martin, expressed concern that the WGA strike may become protracted and acrimonious. In a recent blog post, the 74-year-old stated that the actors were left with no option but to take this course of action due to the AMPTP’s unwillingness to engage. Furthermore, negotiations between the AMPTP and the WGA ceased in May when the strike initially began, making it incredibly challenging to find common ground.
Sharing his personal experience, Martin, who has been on multiple picket lines in New Mexico supporting the strikes, disclosed that his “overall deal” with HBO was suspended on June 1. Additionally, he provided an update regarding the highly anticipated second season of the House Of The Dragon series, featuring Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, and Paddy Considine in lead roles. Martin revealed that while production has been halted due to the strike, the scripts had already been completed earlier in the year. Filming for House Of The Dragon primarily takes place in London, with supplementary locations in Wales, Spain, and elsewhere. The actors are members of the British union, Equity, not Sag-Aftra, and cannot partake in a sympathy strike due to legal restrictions. Martin acknowledged his fortune in being able to continue his work on projects like the stage adaptation of The Iron Throne, an endeavor that remains unaffected by the strike.
The blog post concluded with a cautious optimism, expressing a desire for a swift resolution to the strikes to prevent further repercussions for those involved.
