In the upcoming thriller Control, Kevin Spacey’s face may not appear, but his voice does—and that alone was enough for a London movie theater to cancel its planned world premiere of the film. Despite being found not guilty of sexual assault in July, the staff at Prince Charles Cinema want nothing to do with Spacey. Greg Lynn, the theater’s operator, expressed his dismay in an email to Lauren Metcalfe, one of the film’s producers and co-stars, as reported by the Telegraph. “My staff and I are horrified to be associated with his new film,” Lynn said.
Lynn informed Metcalfe of the cancellation, despite Spacey’s voice being featured in a series of phone calls in the movie. He is credited as “The Voice” in the IMDb cast listing. Metcalfe told the Telegraph that the cancellation came unexpectedly, and she finds the whole situation “very shocking” because she believes “Kevin Spacey has done nothing wrong.” However, according to Deadline, Gene Fallaize, the film’s director, announced on Wednesday that the premiere has found a new home at London’s Genesis Cinema.
A representative for Metcalfe told Variety that Genesis is a “more suitable and appropriate venue.” Meanwhile, Spacey’s attorney expressed disappointment in the decision made by Prince Charles Cinema. Chase Scolnick stated, “It disregards the legal processes of two countries, overlooks the overwhelming evidence of Kevin’s innocence, and dismisses the dedication of numerous unbiased jurors who found Kevin 100% innocent.” Fallaize added that Spacey was “a pleasure to work with” on the movie, as reported by the Telegraph.
