In a significant development, it has been revealed that an officer from London’s Metropolitan Police force, who shot and killed an unarmed Black man, has now been charged with murder, according to prosecutors speaking on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in south London on September 5 last year, when the police pursued Chris Kaba’s car and attempted to stop it. In a narrow residential street in the Streatham Hill neighborhood, two police cars cornered Kaba’s vehicle. It was at this point that the police fired a single round, hitting Kaba through the windscreen of his car.
Rosemary Ainslie, representing the Crown Prosecution Service, announced that after conducting a thorough review of the evidence, they have authorized a murder charge against the unidentified police officer.
Kaba tragically lost his life after being struck by a single bullet.
The police officer involved in the shooting was immediately suspended from duty following the incident and is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The tragic incident has ignited widespread outrage and raised concerns about systemic racism within the police force. Kaba’s family expressed their satisfaction with the latest development and expressed their hope for a swift trial process.
On the day of his death, Kaba was being followed by an unmarked police car that was not using its lights or sirens. He was driving an Audi that was not registered under his name.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct, which conducted an investigation into the case, reported that the shooting occurred after an automatic number plate recognition camera flagged Kaba’s vehicle, indicating its connection to a previous firearms incident.
It is a rare occurrence for police officers in the U.K. to face charges of murder or manslaughter.
In 2021, a police constable was sentenced to eight years in prison for the killing of Dalian Atkinson, a former professional soccer player who died after being shot with a stun gun and kicked in the head during an altercation. The policeman, Benjamin Monk, was acquitted of murder but found guilty of manslaughter.
