Jerusalem — Israel’s government denies reports of a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, despite ongoing missile attacks on the Hamas-controlled enclave. Rumors suggested that the government had agreed to allow humanitarian aid and international passport holders to flee into Egypt. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office states that there is currently no cease-fire and no deal to facilitate the escape of foreign nationals and Palestinian civilians near the Rafah border crossing.
After Hamas’ deadly attacks in southern Israel, Israel is still preparing for a ground offensive in Gaza. The bombardment has resulted in a significant number of casualties, with 2,802 people killed and over 10,000 others wounded, predominantly women and children. While Israel aims to destroy Hamas, President Biden cautions against a full occupation of Gaza and urges Israel to minimize civilian casualties. The United States has repeatedly called for this as well.
Israel’s relentless missile attacks have created a dire humanitarian crisis in the densely populated Gaza Strip. The borders have been sealed, exacerbating the situation further. Among the casualties are thirty U.S. citizens, with around 600 U.S. nationals believed to be trapped in Gaza. Efforts to negotiate hostage releases with Hamas have been hindered by ongoing Israeli bombings.
