Landmark Ruling: Judge Resolves Conservatorship Battle between Ex-NFL Star Michael Oher and Real-Life “The Blind Side” Inspirators

Judge Ends Michael Oher’s Conservatorship

A Tennessee judge has made the decision to terminate the conservatorship agreement between former NFL player Michael Oher and the couple who took him in during his high school years, which became the basis for the movie “The Blind Side.” Judge Kathleen Gomes from the Shelby County Probate Court stated in a court order that the agreement, which allowed Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy to manage Oher’s finances, will now come to an end. The conservatorship was established in 2004 when Oher was 18 and living with the couple while colleges were recruiting him as a talented high school football player.

Judge Gomes clarified that she is not dismissing the case entirely. Oher has requested that the Tuohys present a financial report, detailing any money they may have obtained using his name, image, or likeness, and accusing them of falsely leading him to believe that the agreement meant they were adopting him. Judge Gomes expressed her disbelief that such an agreement was ever reached and revealed that in her extensive career as a judge, she had never encountered a conservatorship agreement involving someone who was not disabled.

During the court proceedings, Oher and the Tuohys were present via video conference but did not provide any statements. In response to Oher’s allegations, Sean Tuohy, who was portrayed by Tim McGraw in the movie adaptation of “The Blind Side,” denied making any profits from the film. He revealed that Michael Lewis, the author of the book that inspired the movie, gave the family half of his earnings, with each member receiving an equal share of around $14,000.

Tuohy explained that they only pursued the conservatorship because Oher wanted to pursue his education at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and legally joining their family was the only way he could attend. As Oher was already 18 years old at the time, adoption was not possible, so they consulted lawyers who informed them that a conservatorship was the best option. Tuohy emphasized that they took every precaution to ensure the legality of the process, even having Oher’s biological mother present in court.
