Cricket – ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 – India vs. New Zealand – Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala, India – October 22, 2023
India’s Virat Kohli displayed his crafty skills by scoring 95 runs, outshining Daryl Mitchell’s rapid 130, as the hosts defeated New Zealand by four wickets in a thrilling match at the 50-overs World Cup on Sunday. This victory helped India maintain their unbeaten streak in the tournament, securing their position at the top of the table.
Mitchell’s impressive century wasn’t enough for New Zealand, as they were all out for 273 runs in exactly 50 overs. Despite a strong partnership between Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra, the Indian bowlers led by Mohammed Shami, who claimed 5-54, applied the brakes and limited New Zealand’s score.
India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, provided a rollicking start with his knock of 46 runs, while Kohli continued his exceptional form with his fourth 50-plus score in five innings. Although Kohli couldn’t finish the chase, his contribution played a vital role in India’s victory, handing New Zealand their first defeat of the tournament.
“It’s a good start to the tournament, but our job is only halfway done,” Rohit commented on India’s impressive campaign. “New Zealand had a big partnership at one stage, and credit goes to our bowlers for their performance in the latter stage of the match.”
India dominated the powerplay segment, but some dropped catches gave New Zealand a lifeline. Despite surviving lbw reviews and a caught-behind decision, Rachin Ravindra, assisted by Mitchell, propelled New Zealand’s score. However, once Shami dismissed Ravindra, New Zealand collapsed, managing only 54 runs in the last 10 overs and losing six wickets.
India’s chase got off to a flying start, thanks to Rohit’s explosive batting, but New Zealand bowlers struck back with crucial wickets. However, a partnership between Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja stabilized India’s innings, setting them up for victory.
“Towards the end, we missed some opportunities to capitalize on our strong position, but credit to India for their excellent bowling,” New Zealand captain Tom Latham acknowledged. “We left a few runs out there on the field.”
