Kilmainham Gaol Recognized by TripAdvisor as a Leading Global Attraction

TripAdvisor, the renowned travel website, has recently unveiled the 2023 Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Top Attractions. These attractions are described as “the most iconic landmarks you must see to believe.”

Kilmainham Gaol has secured the 13th position on this prestigious list, alongside other famous sites such as the Colosseum in Rome, the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, the Empire State Building in New York, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The award is given to experiences and attractions that have received a significant number of exceptional reviews and opinions from the TripAdvisor community over a 12-month period.

In order to win, each attraction must meet rigorous trust and safety standards set by the website.

Kate Urquhart, the General Manager of Experiences at TripAdvisor, expressed gratitude towards those who shared their reviews and helped fellow travelers plan their next memorable trips.

According to Urquhart, these awards honor businesses that are dedicated to providing the TripAdvisor community with unforgettable travel experiences, turning them into adventurers and connecting them with local communities.

It is noteworthy that less than 1% of TripAdvisor’s eight million listings receive the Best of the Best award, signifying the highest level of excellence in the travel industry.

Kilmainham Gaol, with over 27,000 reviews, has been highly praised as a “must-see” and a deeply moving experience.

This historic site held thousands of individuals, including men, women, and children, for a wide range of crimes during its operation for over 100 years. Not only did it house ordinary criminals, but it also played a significant role in some of the most significant events in Irish history, from the 1798 rebellion to the Irish Civil War.

Closed in 1924, Kilmainham Gaol was eventually preserved as a national monument and underwent restoration by the Kilmainham Gaol Restoration Committee in the 1960s. Its historic significance has also made it a popular filming location, appearing in movies like The Italian Job, In The Name of the Father, Michael Collins, and Paddington 2.

Since 1986, Kilmainham Gaol has been managed by the Office of Public Works and remains TripAdvisor’s top attraction in Ireland.
