According to court documents filed last week, Christine Baumgartner, Kevin Costner’s estranged wife, owes over $300,000 to her divorce lawyers, as reported by Entertainment Tonight.
Last week, Costner’s lawyers responded to Baumgartner’s request for him to pay $885,000 to cover legal fees, describing the demand as “nothing short of outrageous.” They also pointed out that Costner had already paid over $300,000 in legal fees to Baumgartner in July.
In the court documents, Baumgartner’s lawyers clarified that she requested $855,000, not $885,000, and explained that she owed her lawyers $314,113 “for past fees and costs.” The remaining $541,887 would go towards future expenses related to their divorce case.
Costner’s lawyers did not provide updated information on the fees and costs he had incurred in the case. However, they stated that he had spent $644,000 on fees and costs through the end of July. Baumgartner’s lawyers argued that Costner was outspending her, even though he claimed to have no idea how much he was spending.

Last month, around the time of their child-support hearing, Baumgartner’s lawyers estimated that Costner had already spent over $850,000 on legal fees.
To even the playing field, Baumgartner’s lawyers requested that the court order Costner to pay her past and future fees in a lump sum no later than September 21, 2023, citing the Family Code’s requirement for a level playing field in terms of attorney’s fees and costs.
In response to the demand for more money, Costner’s lawyers argued that Baumgartner’s uncooperative conduct had forced him to spend substantial amounts on attorney’s fees.
No official comments have been made by representatives of Costner or Baumgartner regarding this matter.
In May, Baumgartner filed for divorce from Costner after 18 years of marriage.
