LEXINGTON — Kentucky had been scoring easily this season, but that changed on Saturday when they faced UNC Wilmington.
The Wildcats, who are usually careful with the ball, struggled with decision-making against the Seahawks of the Coastal Athletic Association.
These factors led to a stunning 80-73 loss at Rupp Arena, their first home defeat this season.
Coach John Calipari expressed his frustration, saying, “We couldn’t stay in front of the ball. It’s hard.”
The defensive errors and turnovers were too much for the No. 12 Wildcats to overcome, especially with UNC Wilmington sinking 11 3-pointers compared to Kentucky’s five.
Kentucky’s 14 turnovers were a departure from their norm of just 8.1 per game, and their 14 assists were a decline from their average of 20.9.
It was the first time this season that Kentucky failed to score at least 81 points, signaling a shaky performance.
Despite the loss, freshman guard Reed Sheppard had an outstanding game, scoring 25 points and tying his personal best. However, his efforts were not enough to secure a win for the Wildcats.
While the loss was disappointing, the Wildcats have the opportunity to regroup and improve before their next game against Penn.
Kentucky has a relaxed schedule ahead, providing them with plenty of practice time to correct their mistakes and come back stronger.
