Kanye Is Buying Parler Platform

Social media platforms keep banning Kanye West, so now he plans to buy his own. The entertainer now known as Ye has struck a deal to buy Parler, which is seen as a sort-of right-wing Twitter, reports Axios. “In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves,” says Ye in a news release put out by Parler. Terms weren’t disclosed, but the deal is expected to close later this year.

“The proposed acquisition will assure Parler a future role in creating an uncancelable ecosystem where all voices are welcome,” parent company Parlement Technologies says in the statement, per CNN. Much remains unclear, including how involved Ye would be in the running of the platform. As the Verge notes, it’s a continuation of a trend, with Elon Musk apparently on track again to take over Twitter and Donald Trump posting from his own Truth Social platform.

Parler itself previously ran into trouble over accusations that people used the platform to help plan the attack on the Capitol in 2021. Both Google and Apple temporarily removed the platform from their app stores after the riot, but both have since restored it on Parler’s promises of better moderation. Ye was recently booted from Twitter over a rant against “Jewish people,” and the Verge notes that Ye himself has spoken in recent years of having manic episodes during which he gets “hyper-paranoid about everything.” (Trump says Ye is acting “crazy” and might need help.)
