CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Vice President Kamala Harris made a high-profile stop in Charleston on her “Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour,” which aims to address critical issues impacting young Americans. As she disembarked from her plane, Harris took a moment to condemn the recent acts of terrorism in Israel, emphasizing the Biden Administration’s commitment to supporting Israel in its defense against such attacks.
Harris’s flight was delayed, but she arrived at the College of Charleston, where she delivered a speech touching on a range of topics, including reproductive freedom, gun safety, voting rights, climate action, LGBTQ+ equality, and concerns surrounding book bans. The Vice President addressed the unique perspective of this college-aged generation on gun violence, noting that many in the crowd had experienced active shooter drills in their schools.
Regarding reproductive rights, Harris stressed the importance of every individual’s access to reproductive care, urging the young generation to elect Congress members who support women’s autonomy over their bodies. She also commented on the ongoing redistricting case in South Carolina’s First Congressional District, highlighting the need for voters to have the power to choose their representatives rather than elected officials controlling the outcome.
Ahead of Harris’s visit, Republican politicians in the Lowcountry shared their thoughts, with Nikki Haley’s spokesperson remarking on the Vice President’s focus on Charleston instead of addressing the border crisis. Meanwhile, the South Carolina Republican Party Chairman criticized Harris for not prioritizing pressing issues such as inflation, interest rates, and border security.
