Former “RuPaul’s Drag Race” contestant Shangela will have to wait for a judge’s decision on whether to dismiss most claims in a man’s lawsuit accusing him of rape in Louisiana in 2020. The lawsuit includes allegations of sexual assault, gender violence, civil rights violations, false imprisonment, negligence, sexual harassment, and failure to prevent sexual harassment. Shangela’s attorneys argue that all five claims are barred by the statute of limitations in both California and Louisiana.
The plaintiff, who worked as a production assistant during the filming of Shangela’s HBO show “We’re Here,” alleges that he was sexually assaulted by Shangela in a Monroe, Louisiana hotel room after an after-work party. The 39-year-old plaintiff is seeking unspecified damages from Shangela, whose real name is Chantaize Darius Jeremy Pierce, and Buckingham Television Inc., the show’s production company.
The lawsuit, filed on May 2, states that the plaintiff did not immediately report the sexual assault for fear of losing his job. Instead, he tried to maintain a cordial relationship with Pierce without changing their interactions or communication.
In response, Buckingham Television attorneys argue that the entire lawsuit should be dismissed based on the statute of limitations defense.
